EcO Start – Smart Pool & Spa Water Analyzer
EcO Start is a connected pool and spa water analyzer designed to make water maintenance easier. Kept directly in the water, it automatically monitors three essential parameters: pH, ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) and water temperature.
The iopool app turns these readings into clear, personalized maintenance recommendations. Instead of interpreting water tests yourself, you know when action is needed, which treatment to use and how much to add.
EcO Start connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and requires no subscription. For remote pool monitoring, the EcO Start + Connect solution adds the iopool cOnnect Bluetooth/Wi-Fi gateway.
For saltwater pools, choose the dedicated EcO Start Salt model.
Make pool and spa maintenance easier
Pool water can change quickly. Rain, high temperatures, heavy swimming activity, filtration and chemical treatments can all affect its balance.
Without regular testing, a small change in pH or disinfecting capacity can develop into cloudy water, algae growth, ineffective chlorine or unnecessary chemical use. Manual test strips are useful, but they only provide a snapshot of the water at the moment of testing.
EcO Start provides automatic monitoring of the parameters that change most frequently, helping you identify imbalances earlier and make more informed treatment decisions.
How does EcO Start work?
EcO Start stays directly in your pool or spa and monitors the water automatically.
First, its sensors measure pH, ORP and water temperature. These readings are then synchronized with the iopool app through Bluetooth when your smartphone is near the pool.
The app interprets the measurements and uses them to provide personalized maintenance recommendations. When an adjustment is required, the app guides you through the treatment and indicates how much product to add.
Additional parameters such as stabilizer (CYA), total alkalinity (TA) and calcium hardness (CH) are checked occasionally with test strips.
EcO Start monitors and recommends treatments; it does not automatically add chemicals to the water.
Setting up EcO Start takes only a few minutes. Add the analyzer to your pool in the iopool app, place it in the water and connect to it via Bluetooth to retrieve your measurements and recommendations.
What does EcO Start measure?
pH
pH indicates how acidic or alkaline your pool water is. Maintaining the correct pH helps improve swimmer comfort, protects pool equipment and allows disinfectants such as chlorine to work effectively.
For most swimming pools, iopool recommends keeping pH around 7.2 to 7.4.
Pool pH Too High or Too Low: Causes, Effects and How to Fix It
ORP – oxidation-reduction potential
ORP, also called Redox potential, is expressed in millivolts (mV). It indicates the water's ability to oxidize contaminants and therefore provides an indication of its disinfecting capacity.
ORP is not the same as the amount of free chlorine in the water. Two pools with a similar chlorine concentration can have different disinfecting capacities depending on factors such as pH and stabilizer levels.
EcO Start therefore monitors the effectiveness of disinfection rather than directly measuring free chlorine concentration.
Water temperature
Water temperature affects much more than swimming comfort. Warmer water can increase biological activity and change how quickly disinfectants are consumed.
By monitoring temperature together with pH and ORP, the iopool app can provide more relevant guidance for your pool or spa.
What EcO Start measures — and what it does not
| Parameter | EcO Start |
|---|---|
| pH | Automatically monitored |
| ORP / Redox | Automatically monitored |
| Water temperature | Automatically monitored |
| Free chlorine concentration | Checked with test strips |
| Stabilizer / CYA | Checked with test strips |
| Total alkalinity / TA | Checked with test strips |

The included 6-in-1 test strips complement the connected analyzer by checking the water parameters that do not require continuous monitoring.
Pool Water Alkalinity and Hardness: What They Are, Target Levels, and How to Correct Them
The main benefits of EcO Start
Know when your water needs attention
Regular monitoring helps identify changes before they develop into more visible problems such as cloudy or green water.
Reduce guesswork
The iopool app converts measurements into actionable recommendations instead of simply displaying numbers.
Use the right amount of treatment
When treatment is required, the app indicates which product to use and the recommended quantity, helping avoid approximate dosing and unnecessary additions.
Spend less time testing manually
EcO Start automatically follows pH, ORP and temperature. Test strips remain useful for parameters such as alkalinity, hardness and stabilizer, but they do not need to replace the connected monitoring of your main water parameters.
No subscription
Access to the iopool app and its pool maintenance features does not require a monthly subscription.
Designed for long-term pool monitoring
EcO Start is designed to stay in the water during the swimming season so its sensors remain wet and can continue monitoring your pool or spa.
On current EcO V2 models, the battery and sensor module can be replaced when necessary, helping extend the useful life of the device.
Calibration is not required when a new EcO Start is first installed. From the second season onward, calibration at the beginning of the season is recommended. For spas or indoor pools where the probe is never winterized, annual calibration is recommended.
When the water becomes too cold, EcO Start should be placed in winter mode according to iopool's winter storage instructions.
Who is EcO Start for?
EcO Start is particularly useful for:
Family pools where water conditions can change rapidly depending on weather and swimming activity.
Spas where smaller water volumes and higher temperatures can make water balance change quickly.
First-time pool owners who want clear guidance instead of interpreting water chemistry alone.
Experienced pool owners who want automatic monitoring between manual water tests.
Second homes and holiday properties when EcO Start is combined with the cOnnect gateway for remote monitoring.
The standard EcO Start is not designed for salt-treated pools. For a salt chlorination system, choose EcO Start Salt.
How does a connected pool water analyzer work?
A connected pool water analyzer uses sensors placed directly in the water to monitor important water-quality parameters automatically. EcO Start measures pH, ORP and temperature and sends the readings to the iopool app. The app interprets the data and provides maintenance recommendations, reducing the need to rely only on occasional manual tests.
What is the difference between ORP and chlorine level?
A chlorine test measures the amount of chlorine present in the water, while ORP measures the water's oxidation-reduction potential, which is an indicator of disinfecting capacity. EcO Start measures ORP rather than free chlorine concentration directly. Factors such as pH and stabilizer can influence how effectively the chlorine already present in the water works.
Do I still need test strips with a connected pool analyzer?
Yes. EcO Start automatically monitors pH, ORP and temperature, but some slower-changing parameters still need occasional manual testing. The included 6-in-1 test strips allow you to check parameters such as stabilizer, alkalinity and hardness when recommended by the iopool app.
Why choose EcO Start?
EcO Start combines automatic water monitoring with practical treatment guidance in one system.
With the standard EcO Start, you get automatic pH, ORP and temperature monitoring through Bluetooth when you are near your pool. If you want access to your pool data while away from home, EcO Start + Connect adds the cOnnect gateway to relay the data through Wi-Fi.
For salt-treated pools, a dedicated EcO Start Salt version is available.
All versions work with the iopool app without a subscription, allowing you to choose the connectivity and water-treatment compatibility that match your pool.
EcO Start also includes a 2-year warranty and is designed with replaceable components on the current V2 generation.
