Using household bleach in your pool is not a good idea. The latter can be dangerous, but also cause you to waste unnecessary sums of money. Some sources claim it is safe to use in a swimming pool. Well... it won't completely destroy your pool. However, there are more cons than pros. Here is why.
1. Your Pool May Not Actually Get Sanitized
Traditional household bleach is a lot weaker than pool chlorine products. You will thus need to add tons of product to reach the disinfection level of chlorine. Moreover, bleach evaporates quickly under UV rays.
2. Bleach Is Dangerous To Your Pool And Health
Bleach is known to increase lime scaling. This will cause a gray deposit on your pool equipments and will eventually permanently damage them. Most importantly, if you use too much of it, the water will become toxic and extremely hazardous to swimmers.
There are also reports concerning bleach and human health.
" Bleach is very irritating and corrosive to the skin, lungs, and eyes. As well, it has been known to burn human tissue internally or externally. On top of this- it may cause skin rash, extreme headaches, migraines, (...) In addition, it can damage the nervous system." (Source)
3. You Will Waste Money 💸
As mentioned before, household bleach does not have the same strength as chlorine. Because of this, you will need to use a ton of it to get the same effect.
Using bleach in your pool is a BAD idea
Liquid bleach may seem like the cheaper option, but you will end up spending even more money and time on your pool than if you had used proper pool chemicals.
⚠️Note that bleach also has a very high pH of 12, whereas a swimming pool should be around 7.4. Overall, it is best to stick with pool-friendly chemicals and not risk your health, your time and money.
